The weather has been so good and rain-free this entire month of May that I am so far behind on my trip reports which is why I am only posting this now! As close as Swartswood is, I usually don't go here very often, I usually end up at its smaller cousin, Little Swartswood Lake. With overcast skies I knew I had to get out and do some fishing, but also I wanted to take my oldest daughter somewhere new. She doesn't paddle much, just floating and listening to music, but taking her to the same old places gets a bit stale. We headed out and dropped in at the western launch since its less busier than the regular boat launch - but also we chose this spot to pad…

It's been a bit of a slow start for me this season, and I have really had to pick my spots. This location was one of the last few I visited in the fall, and I went into this season not really having a plan on where I wanted to go first. Recently my daughter and I hiked near the area, after we had to abandon the Sussex Branch Trail near Cranberry Lake due to flooding. Once I revisited from my hike I wanted to come back and fish it again. I had a window on Saturday morning before the winds were forecasted to come in, and off I went. The lake was like glass in the morning, and was covered with a thin sheen of pollen & white snow - those white seed pods t…

Since I've discovered the Musconetcong (largely in part because of this group), this is always an early season destination for me. It satisfies that itch to get on the water and shake off the rust from the winter. I had only been out once prior so now the kayaking itch is in full swing. It was a Friday afternoon and I was working from home, and thank God my new boss is super flexible with time. I casually mentioned maybe leaving work an hour early and she practically kicked me off the network and told me to go - so thankful to have hit the lottery in that respect. I spent my last hour on company time loading up the kayak and off I went. I barely covered any gr…

Ryker Lake, Sparta NJ (Sussex County), 04.16.23 Ok, I'm here doing this new format here, let's see how this goes! First trip of the year for me in 2023; I had tried to hold off until the beginning of May, but with all of the warm weather we'd been having, the lure was far too great. From my hikes near bodies of water this past month, I'd been observing quite a few largemouth beginning to mill about in the shallows and I just couldn't help myself any longer. My decision to go here first was an easy one for me; I ended my season here last November almost 5 months to the day, and it just made sense to make things come around full circle. I know it's not a t…

I heard there's a large tree down around mile marker 7 difficult to get over. This was on Jan 7. Water level was at 1.5 the current was running strong there very hard to get back in the boat once you got over the trees.

So as many of you may know from a previous post, I had been laid off from my company recently. On Friday I turned in my laptop early, and with nothing immediate to do afterwards I figured it was time for some hydro-therapy. I honestly didn't feel like wasting precious daylight in the car so I stayed local and visited Ryker Lake. While I was on the water I got a call from one of the recruiters from my company: "Hey Ted it's X I tried to reach you but you were offline on Webex." "Uh, hello. Well it was my last day today and I turned my laptop in a few hours ago....so yeah I have been offline." Anyway while I was out paddling I received wor…
